The logging clear cuts above the Santiam
River are full of beautiful blooming pink rhoderdendrons and bear grass.
We had the best time sitting out in the sun sketching all the beautiful
views!
What a treat!
Doc and Connies house is nestled in the hills across from Travis
and Cynthias.... I guess a bit of distance is good for neighbors and
relatives even out here in cattle country.
The one titled Cows and Cat was a quick sketch I did to remind myself
that Travis had left the ranch for some years to be a heavy equipment
operator... it's come in handy laying miles and miles of waterline...
this bulldozer (cat) doubles as a scratching post for these lovely
heifers.
Hillside Mosaic was to remind me of how close the ranch is to the
John Day Fossil Beds and the Painted Hills... there were areas out
there that were big colorful striated rock slides... just like in the
painted hills..... the red color was repeated in the rich red coats
of the cows. Beautiful.
In mid June over in the Ochocco Mountains past Prineville the Yellow
Balsalms are in full bloom. Nestled up in this stand of ponderosa
pines we found a beautiful place to view the thousands of flowers....
I loved the rivers of red from the Indian Paintbrush -- it was a painting
that just called out to be painted!
Norma on Location
The last few years we have been lucky
enough to go to Mexico for a getaway during the winter. I love
to capture the excellent people watching on paper. Poolside is
always a great place to catch some interesting images.
I have this philosophy about photography
and traveling. I don’t want to be looking through a narrow
lens waiting for something to happen… I’d rather
be looking around and taking it all in because for darn sure
it will be like looking up at the summer sky watching for shooting
stars-- always looking the wrong way at the right time and missing
the main event!
I do carry along my sketchbook. I’m always doodling… trying
to capture little scenes (that of course my camera was not
ready for) and getting them down on paper. I use these to get
the color palate and a feeling for place on paper for later
use or just to remember what I was doing and what happened.
I do back up sketches with photos if I know I’m going
to want to work on a project more in the studio |
